Terry Taylor—Sergei
The TrenchTerry Taylor and Sergei are connected by a hostile, coercive relationship that unfolds within the Benthos’s closed hierarchy. An earlier incident leaves Terry vulnerable to further threats, while Sergei’s standing among Benedict Singer’s staff gives him unusual freedom aboard ship. Terry first responds with fear and a wish to escape; later, she confronts Sergei directly, invoking Benedict’s authority as a shield. Their conflict therefore charts both the danger of the ship’s internal order and Terry’s changing response to it.
An Incident and a Warning
Heath Williams approaches Terry after overhearing Sergei discuss what had happened between them. Terry says she will feel better once she is off the ship, a brief answer that conveys how strongly she associates the Benthos with danger. Heath makes that danger explicit: Sergei is talking about killing her. His warning turns a personal conflict into an immediate threat to Terry’s life, and she reacts by going pale and asking for the captain so she can report what happened.
Heath discourages that course. In his account, the ship does not operate according to the laws its visitors expect: Benedict’s rules prevail, and outsiders have little standing. He explains that Sergei belongs to Benedict’s personal staff, a group with access throughout the vessel, including the secured storage areas on G deck. This access is more than a marker of rank. It helps explain why Terry cannot assume that reporting Sergei will separate her from him or put her under reliable protection.
Heath also warns that Benedict is unlikely to side with her. He believes that confronting Benedict or appearing likely to contact authorities could make Terry seem like a threat, with lethal consequences. Terry counters that her father knows she is below and that JAMSTEC expects her report within two weeks; she believes the project’s exposure to shutdown should prevent Benedict from killing her. Heath rejects that confidence. Their exchange establishes the unequal terms of Terry and Sergei’s conflict: she can point to obligations and scrutiny beyond the ship, while Heath believes that, aboard the Benthos, Benedict’s power may override them.
Sergei’s Presence on the Bridge
The threat becomes immediate when Sergei appears behind Terry on the bridge. The captain has just been speaking about Benedict’s range, and Terry sees his expression shift from frustration to fear before turning around. Sergei angrily demands to know why she is there. Terry goes limp, a physical response that sharply contrasts with the defiance she will show later; at this moment, his presence overwhelms her ability to act.
The captain orders Sergei to the docking station, but the order does not immediately end the confrontation. Sergei grabs Terry from behind and threatens to settle matters with her that night. Terry twists away and falls to the floor as the captain steps forward and orders Sergei off the bridge. The captain’s intervention interrupts the encounter, but the scene does not establish that Sergei has been disciplined or that Terry has gained lasting protection. His ability to approach and threaten her despite the captain’s presence gives concrete force to Heath’s earlier warning about the ship’s hierarchy.
Terry’s Countermove on G Deck
Later, Terry descends to G deck while still unsure whether she will board the Prometheus. In the corridor, she sees Sergei using a magnetic pass card to enter a vaultlike storage room. The sight places him at the secured area Heath had identified as accessible to Benedict’s inner circle. Sergei notices her before he can enter, and waits with a mocking expression. Terry continues toward him despite her uncertainty and fear.
This time she answers the threat with a direct warning: she tells Sergei to stop taunting her and says that interfering with her means interfering with Benedict. Sergei’s smile disappears. Terry then walks past him and enters the docking area, her heart racing, before descending into the Prometheus. Her action does not prove that Sergei has lost his access or that the danger is over. Instead, it marks a limited but important reversal: where his appearance on the bridge had left her limp, she now uses the authority he serves as leverage against him and continues with her intended movement through the ship.
Power, Fear, and Resistance
The relationship is shaped less by mutual understanding than by an imbalance in access and protection. Sergei’s position among Benedict’s staff allows him to move into restricted spaces and approach Terry; the captain can intervene in a particular encounter, but Heath doubts that ordinary appeals to authority will protect her. Terry’s reliance on her father, JAMSTEC, and the prospect of a project shutdown reflects her attempt to bring outside accountability to a place that, in Heath’s view, answers to Benedict alone.
Terry’s responses also change across the evidence. She initially seeks the captain’s help and is visibly overwhelmed when Sergei confronts her. Later, although her fear remains physically present, she chooses to address him and invokes Benedict’s power in order to pass him. The relationship consequently remains dangerous and unresolved, but Terry is no longer only the object of Sergei’s intimidation: her final confrontation shows her finding a way to act within the very hierarchy that has placed her at risk.
